Powerball Divisions in Australia: All Nine Explained

Australian Powerball pays nine divisions, not one prize, and the Powerball divisions do not run in a straight line from most numbers to fewest. This page lists all nine with the operator-published odds, then gives you a match matrix so you can read your own line straight off the table instead of counting balls twice.

Read that table alongside the barrels it comes from. Seven winning numbers are drawn from a barrel of 35, and one Powerball is drawn from a separate barrel of 20. Every one of the nine Powerball divisions is a combination of those two facts, which is why the Powerball turns up in six of the nine rows. It is the scarce ingredient, and the ladder prices it accordingly.

The Match Matrix: Which Division Your Line Takes

The fastest way to place a line is to count how many main numbers it matched and then look up the row below. The left column is your main-number count, and the two right columns split on whether your Powerball matched. Everything in this table is generated from the same division rules the checker uses, so it cannot drift out of step with the result the tool gives you.

Why Division 6 Outranks Division 7

This is the single most misread part of the Australian Powerball divisions. Four main numbers plus the Powerball is Division 6. Five main numbers without the Powerball is Division 7 — a worse result despite the extra main number. It looks wrong until you look at the published odds: Division 6 sits at 1 in 1,173 while Division 7 sits at 1 in 892, so the four-plus-Powerball line is genuinely the rarer event and the ladder rewards it.

The same logic runs through the whole structure. Division 3 asks for six numbers with the Powerball; Division 4 asks for six without it. Division 8 asks for three with the Powerball and Division 9 asks for two with it, which makes Division 9 the entry point at 1 in 65. What you cannot do is win on the Powerball alone. There is no division for it, and no division for one main number beside it either.

What Each Powerball Division Pays

We publish odds for all nine divisions and a dollar amount for none of them except the top. Division 1 carries a published minimum of $4,000,000 and rolls into the following draw when nobody takes it. For divisions 2 through 9 no operator publishes a fixed figure, because the amount depends on the size of the prize pool that week and how many entries land in that division. Any number we printed would be invented, and an invented prize figure is exactly the kind of claim this site refuses to make. Taken together, the nine Powerball divisions give overall odds of about 1 in 44 of winning something on one standard game. Lotterywest states its published odds are approximate, rounded, and based on one standard game. Our own combinatorial check of that figure lands at 1 in 43.982, which is the same number after rounding — a useful confirmation that the published table is internally consistent rather than a second, competing figure.

How the 2018 Change Created Division 9

Before Thursday 19 April 2018 there were only 8 Powerball divisions, and the game drew 6 numbers from a barrel of 40. Draw 1144 changed both. The barrel shrank to 35, the draw grew to 7 numbers, and a ninth division was added at the bottom of the ladder. The overall odds improved from 1 in 78 to 1 in 44 through the introduction of division nine. If you are reading an older guide that lists eight divisions, it predates that draw and no longer describes the game you are playing.

Reading Your Own Docket

A printed entry lists each line separately, and each line is assessed on its own against the draw. One docket can therefore hold several winning lines in different Powerball divisions at once. What a line cannot do is take two divisions — it is awarded the best one it qualifies for and nothing else.
